What is Fitwel?

Fitwel is an evidence-based certification system developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and operated by the Center for Active Design (CfAD).

It evaluates a building’s design and operational strategies across 12 key impact categories, including:

  1. Location & Transportation – Access to active transport and amenities.
  2. Building Access – Secure and inclusive entrances.
  3. Outdoor Spaces – Safe, accessible, and engaging outdoor areas.
  4. Entrances & Ground Floor – Welcoming, health-promoting lobbies and shared spaces.
  5. Stairwells – Encouraging physical activity through design.
  6. Indoor Environment – Healthy air, light, and acoustics.
  7. Workspaces – Design features that enhance comfort and productivity.
  8. Shared Spaces – Facilities that promote social interaction.
  9. Water Supply – Safe, clean, and accessible drinking water.
  10. Food – Access to nutritious food options.
  11. Emergency Preparedness – Measures to safeguard health during emergencies.
  12. Innovation – Pioneering strategies beyond standard practice.

Fitwel certification uses a star rating system (1–3 stars), making it an accessible and scalable solution for projects at all stages of development or operation.
